The Heritage Route

Follow the story of the Limpopo Valley's early kingdoms, its rock art and the living culture of the north.

Start in Mapungubwe, where the hill, the interpretation centre and rock art visits explain the kingdom that traded from this valley. Further east, Thulamela sits in the far north of Kruger, and community-led visits in Venda and the Makgabeng hills add the present day to the past.

Wildlife and big landscapes

Combine private reserves in the Limpopo Valley with the far north of Kruger, and cross to Tuli if you have the time.

On foot

Walking camps in the far north of Kruger, mountain trails in the Soutpansberg and guided bush walks.

Some of the north is best seen slowly. Walking camps and guided trails in Pafuri, hiking on Soutpansberg reserves and bush walks in the Limpopo Valley can anchor a trip, with a quieter base between walks.

A longer stay in one place

Choose one base and let the area come to you: day trips, guides, art studios and time by the river.

Not every trip needs a circuit. A mountain lodge in the Soutpansberg, a river camp on the Mogalakwena or a reserve in the Limpopo Valley can be a base for a week, with day experiences added as you go.
